■ TITLE
Flexibility and gating: how sensory input transforms into motor action
■ ABSTRACT
To survive in the world, brains must transform sensory signals into appropriate behavioral decisions. Our understanding of this process has focused on decisions involving a single sensory cue. But in the natural world, internally and externally generated sensory signals typically span different modalities. How and where is this multimodal information combined? In this talk, I will introduce our findings that tackle these questions with state-of-the-art techniques, such as circuit-specific optogenetic manipulation and in vivo calcium imaging. I will discuss the function of cortical circuits that integrate multimodal sensory information in a flexible way and gate the sensory inputs to flexible motor actions.
