TITLE
Novel Terahertz Spectroscopies
■
ABSTRACT
Terahertz
spectroscopy, spanning the range from 0-20 THz, or equivalently, 0-660 cm-1,
has been widely and very successfully used in the study of charge carrier
dynamics in semiconductors[1]. There have been decidedly fewer successful
studies reporting molecular spectroscopy in this interesting fingerprint
region, where optical phonons and low-frequency vibrational modes are active.
At room temperature, substantial thermal excitation of these low-frequency
modes typically occurs, determining the structural dynamics in a variety of
systems.
Here, I describe our recent efforts to implement new types of terahertz spectroscopies to obtain important insights in both phonon dynamics in solid-state materials [2] and coupling between high-frequency modes and low-frequency modes in water [3] and other systems.
